Jul. 28th, 2005 @ 08:24 pm Opinions?
I have been mulling it over for some time, and I'm ready to make a commitment and purchase a camcorder.

The problem is, I do not have a clue what to buy, but I do have some specs that I definitely want and I have a price range.

I don't trust salesmen, I've known too many of them, and I'd rather get some opinions from users anyway.

Things I need:

I must have the ability to download what I record to my computer for editing and recording to DVD preferrably - I have USB. It must be capable of recording sports events without blurring etc., as I will be interested in  recording hockey games, martial arts competitions, and other fast moving sports. I would like as much optical zoom as possible, as some of those hockey games are recorded from quite far away. I would also prefer to have decent sound quality.

Things I don't need:

I don't care about digital stills. I have a digital camera, so having a memory card and the ability to snap jpgs is not important to me at all. If it does I don't care, but it's not a selling feature to me.

My price range is less than $600 CDN. There are, from what I can see, several options in several makes in that price range with those specs. What I'd like to know from all of you is which is the best in terms of what I'm looking for, and simply what is the least prone to manufacturer's defects?

Thanks in advance for your help, once I make my purchase I'm certain I'll be making some really poor quality movies. My 11 year old son and his buddies made their first a few weeks ago with a digital camera - a star wars spoof that was hilarious. I have tons of ideas for mostly comedies. First things first, I have to decide on which camera to buy.
